What Is Batten Cladding?

Batten cladding is formed by fixing individual timber boards with consistent spacing between each piece, creating a slatted appearance across the surface. The gaps between battens introduce shadow lines that shift with the light, adding depth and visual interest compared to flat cladding systems.

This approach is widely used for external facades, garden screening, and interior feature walls, where a more structured finish is desired.

Design & Applications

Batten cladding is used to shape both exterior and interior spaces.

  • It works well on facades, where shadow lines add depth and rhythm, and is equally suited to garden screening and boundary treatments.
  • Internally, it creates strong feature walls, while externally it complements oak frame buildings, pergolas, and other structures.
  • Boards can be installed vertically or horizontally, depending on the proportions and overall design intent.

Your Batten Cladding Timber Options

Our batten cladding is available in both hardwood and softwood species, each offering a distinct look and performance profile.

  • Dense hardwoods such as Balau, Ipe, and oak provide a more robust finish with richer tones, suited to high-exposure areas.
  • Softwoods, including cedar and larch, offer a lighter appearance with good stability and a more cost-conscious approach.

All timber will naturally weather over time, typically softening to a silver-grey if left untreated. Variation in colour and grain is part of the material’s character, giving each installation a unique finish.

Profiles, Sizes & Spacing

Batten boards are available in a choice of profiles, including PAR (planed all round) for a square-edged finish, or eased edges for a softer detail. Typical thicknesses range from 18–21mm, with widths from around 40mm up to 140mm. Spacing is usually set at approximately 10mm, though this can be adjusted to influence the overall look.

Wider gaps create a more open, lightweight feel, while tighter spacing gives a more defined appearance.

Your Installation

Batten cladding is typically fixed to a timber or aluminium subframe, with consistent spacing essential to achieve an even finish. Adequate ventilation behind the boards helps manage moisture and supports long-term performance. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for durability, particularly with hardwoods. All battens are cut to order, so lead times may apply depending on the specification and quantities required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can batten cladding be used internally?

Yes, batten cladding works well inside as well as out. It’s often used for feature walls, ceilings, and room dividers, where the spacing between boards adds depth and texture to otherwise flat surfaces.

Can battens be installed both vertically and horizontally?

Yes, battens can be installed in either direction. Vertical layouts tend to emphasise height, while horizontal arrangements can make a facade feel wider. The choice usually comes down to the proportions of the building and the overall design intent.

Does batten cladding need ventilation?

Yes, ventilation behind the boards is important, particularly for external applications. A ventilated cavity allows air to circulate and helps prevent moisture from becoming trapped, supporting long-term performance.

What spacing should I use for batten cladding?

A spacing of around 10mm between battens is commonly used, as it provides a balanced shadow line without leaving the surface too open. That said, spacing can be adjusted depending on the look you want to achieve, with wider gaps creating a lighter, more open feel.

Which timber is best for batten cladding?

The right timber depends on your priorities. Hardwoods such as Balau, Ipe, and oak offer greater density and durability, while cedar and larch provide a lighter appearance and a more cost-conscious option. All can perform well when correctly specified.

Will batten cladding turn grey over time?

If left untreated, most timbers will gradually weather to a silver-grey tone as they are exposed to sunlight and moisture. This is a natural process and does not affect durability. Oils can be applied if you prefer to retain the original colour.
