What Is Solid Oak Flooring?

Solid oak flooring is made from boards cut from a single piece of European oak. Each plank is machined with a tongue-and-groove profile to ensure a secure fit during installation.

Typically around 21–22mm thick, these boards provide a substantial and authentic timber floor. Because the surface is solid wood throughout, it can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime.

Why You Should Choose It

Solid oak flooring has long been valued for its durability and enduring character.

  • Each board reveals the natural grain, knots, and tonal variation of the timber, giving the floor a depth that develops further with age.
  • Because the boards are solid throughout, they can be sanded and refinished multiple times over their life, allowing the surface to be refreshed as needed.

This combination of longevity and authenticity makes solid oak a natural choice for period properties and traditional interiors, while still sitting comfortably within more contemporary homes.

Installation Considerations

Solid oak flooring requires careful preparation before installation:

  • Boards should acclimate in the room for around two weeks so the timber can adjust to the environment.
  • A small expansion gap must also be left around the perimeter to allow for natural movement.
  • The subfloor should be dry, level, and properly prepared before fitting.
  • Solid boards are commonly bonded to screed or secret-nailed to joists where appropriate.
  • Because solid timber responds more noticeably to temperature changes, it is not typically recommended for use with underfloor heating.

Grades, Finishes, and Board Sizes

Our solid oak flooring is available in Prime, Character, and Rustic grades, allowing you to choose the level of grain variation and knotting that suits your interior.

Prime boards offer a cleaner, more uniform appearance, while Character and Rustic grades introduce greater natural detail. Boards are supplied unfinished, ready to be sanded and finished on site with oil, wax, or lacquer. This approach allows the final tone and sheen to be adjusted to your space. We can also machine bespoke board widths up to 205mm.

As with all natural timber, variation in grain and colour should be expected, giving each floor its own distinctive character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can solid oak flooring be installed over concrete?

Yes, solid oak flooring can be installed over concrete or screed subfloors, typically by bonding the boards with a suitable adhesive. The surface must be dry, level, and properly prepared before installation, and a damp-proof membrane may be required depending on site conditions.

Can solid oak flooring be used with underfloor heating?

Solid oak flooring is generally not recommended for use with underfloor heating. Because the boards are made from a single piece of timber, they respond more noticeably to temperature changes. This movement can lead to gaps or distortion over time. In homes with underfloor heating, engineered flooring is usually the more stable choice.

Do solid oak boards move or crack?

All solid timber moves slightly as temperature and humidity change. Small gaps, surface cracks, or seasonal movement are a natural characteristic of solid oak. These changes do not affect the strength of the floor and are generally considered part of the material’s natural character.

Do solid oak floors need acclimatisation before installation?

Yes. Solid oak boards should acclimatise in the room where they will be installed for around two weeks before fitting. This allows the timber to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the space, helping to reduce excessive movement once the floor is laid.

How long does solid oak flooring last?

With proper installation and maintenance, solid oak flooring can last for many decades. It is not unusual for solid timber floors to remain in use for generations. Periodic sanding and refinishing help maintain the appearance while extending the lifespan of the boards.

How many times can solid oak floors be sanded?

Solid oak flooring can be sanded and refinished many times during its life. Because the boards are typically around 21–22mm thick, the surface can be restored repeatedly as wear occurs. This ability to refinish the floor is one of the main reasons solid oak is valued for long-term use.
